Bennett Suthers for Gympie Regional Council

I have resided in Gympie since the late 1950’s, my father was born in Gympie as was my grandfather. My great grandfather arrived I believe in the 1880’s. He was a mine manager until his death in 1906, he was also Bennett Suthers. Great Uncle William Suthers was a previous Mayor of Gympie, his brothers were John, Edward, Bennett, Herbert and Joseph. I am married and have a grown up family who were all educated in local schools.

I have been involved in voluntary work in this community for many years including as an Honorary Officer with Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigade for over ten years.

I am a member of the State Emergency Service, as a member for thirty years during which I have attended many callouts including storm damaged homes, searches for missing persons, searches for evidence, motor accidents and community events like Gold Rush etc.

I am currently the Divisional Superintendent of the Gympie Division of St John Ambulance Australia.I have been a member of this organization for more than sixteen years.

I am currently the President of the Gympie and District Historical Society and am at present in my second term. In more recent times I have been working with the Work for the Dole and other volunteers in restoring some of Gympie’s history in repairing horse drawn vehicles at the museum.
